In 2013, a national survey in the US reported the number of drivers who reported using their cellphones to access the Internet while driving had risen to nearly one of four. This has introduced additional difficulties for law enforcement officials when attempting to distinguish one usage from another in drivers using their devices. Due to the increasing complexity of mobile phones, they are often more like mobile computers in their available uses. Bienville Square is a historic park in the Lower Dauphin Street Historic District. Mobile has more than 45 public parks within its limits, with some that are of special note. The first mobile news service, delivered via SMS, was launched in Finland in 2000, and subsequently many organizations provided “on-demand” and “instant” news services by SMS. A common data application on mobile phones is Short Message Service (SMS) text messaging. Of the two, Android has been the best-selling system worldwide on smartphones since 2011, and as of March 2025, Android had 71.9% of the overall market share, while iOS had 27.7%. Feature phones have basic software platforms whilst smartphones have a fully-featured operating system (commonly abbreviated to an OS), with the two most-used platforms being Android and iOS.

In 1766, the town’s population was estimated to be 860 people, although the borders were smaller than during the French colonial period. The Treaty of Paris ceded French territories east of the Mississippi River to Britain, including Mobile. French Canadian brothers Pierre Le Moyne d’Iberville and Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne, Sieur rivo casino de Bienville founded the site to establish control over France’s claims to La Louisiane.

Several historic cemeteries were established shortly after the colonial era. The Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception was built on the colonial-era Campo Santo cemetery, of which no trace remains. Other architectural styles in the city include shotgun houses, Colonial Revival, Tudor Revival, Spanish Colonial Revival, and Beaux-Arts. Structures like the Mobile City Hospital were built on an imposing scale with round doric columns in their facades. The 1827 fire and an economic boom in the 1830s allowed much of the city to be rebuilt, often in the optimistic and then-popular Greek Revival style. Fires in 1827 and 1839 destroyed the city’s remaining wooden colonial architecture. The race to create truly portable telephone devices began after World War II, with developments taking place in many countries. Early predecessors of cellular phones included analog radio communications from ships and trains. The growth in popularity has been rapid in some places; for example, in the UK, the total number of mobile phones overtook the number of houses in 1999. In addition, they enable multimedia playback and streaming, including video content, as well as radio and television streaming. Modern mobile telephony relies on a cellular network architecture, which is why mobile phones are often referred to as ‘cell phones’ in North America. Most early content for mobile phones tended to be copies of legacy media, such as banner advertisements or TV news highlight video clips. Today, mobile phones are globally ubiquitous, and in almost half the world’s countries, over 90% of the world population, or approximately 7.2 billion people, owns at least one. Furthermore, mobile phones offer satellite-based services, such as navigation and messaging, as well as business applications and payment solutions (via scanning QR codes or near-field communication (NFC)). These include text messaging, multimedia messaging, email, and internet access (via LTE, 5G NR or Wi-Fi), as well as short-range wireless technologies like Bluetooth, infrared, and ultra-wideband (UWB). Beyond traditional voice communication, digital mobile phones have evolved to support a wide range of additional services.
